For most individuals, tax breaks under section 80D continue to remain under utilised. This section allows deductions for expenses towards purchase of health insurance up to Rs 15,000. Since most salaried people are covered under some form of group policy, there is a tendency to buy limited health insurance.
Apollo DKV’s Maxima Health cover
Apollo DKV’s Maxima Health cover seeks to take advantage of this under-utilised tax exemption by allowing reimbursement for regular medical expenditure such as pharmacy bills, routine diagnostics, visits to the general practitioner and dental expenses, which are not covered under mediclaim.
To make it easier for an individual to claim these expenses, the company issues vouchers which can be redeemed against medicines or services by healthcare providers.
The premium's benefits
For a single adult, the premium ranges from Rs 13,795 to Rs 24,831, depending on his age. The sum insured for hospitalisation treatment is Rs 3 lakh and the vouchers that are handed out with the policy for outpatient treatment come with sub limits.
For instance, the outpatient benefits include three consultations with a GP and one consultation with a specialist with per visit payment limits of Rs 350 and Rs 500, respectively. For diagnostic, dental and optical treatment, the sub-limits are Rs 1,000 once a year while for pharmacy, the ceiling is Rs 2,000.
No maximum cover ceasing age
This policy covers persons in the age group of 91 days onwards. While the maximum entry age is 65 years, there is no maximum cover ceasing age in this policy.
This policy can be taken by an individual or a family on a floater basis (sum assured is available only once) covering two adults and up to two.

All pre-existing diseases are covered
The exclusions under the policy include any treatment within the first 30 days of cover except any accidental injury. There is also a two-year exclusion for specific diseases. From the fourth year onwards, all pre-existing diseases are covered. It also excludes ailments arising out of abuse of intoxicants or hallucinogenic substance such as drugs and alcohol. HIV and AIDS treatment are also excluded, in addition to exclusion of non-allopathic treatment.
In the first phase, Maxima will be made available in six cities, including New Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chennai, Bangalore and Kolkata. Most of the Apollo group’s pharmacy chain and hospitals are part of the network.
