how to improve my cibil score?

My request for car loan has been rejected in July 2012, due to an outstanding credit card. So I did some investigation and found out that it's due to cibil score. I had 3 credit cards previously and all of them are upto date. I also have a personal load in fact settled but still showing outstanding. Now how to improve my cibil score. I have to go for a home loan.

Kindly advise what to do?

First thing first - checkout why this outstanding loan is on you file - check out the reason and remove it from you file.
